We welcome all nationalities to our conference! Looking at the continents all of the 133 participants are originating from, most come from Europe (54 %). Second is North and South America (21 %), third the Far East (15 %). The top 10 of countries is:
We are also happy to welcome five people from Africa, a continent that we do not see so much at our annual conferences. Countries like Ghana, Gambia, Uganda, Nigeria and South Africa definitely stimulate our (football) imagination. Looking forward to meeting all of you.
From Saturday July 5th, 5 pm until Saturday July 12th, 5 pm there will be a special cell phone number for all your urgent questions regarding the conference. It is available for calling, texting or Whatsapp use. Although we expect you to plan your journeys carefully yourself, this phone number is also available if you get stuck during your travels, or want directions when you got lost. Please consider the existence of time zones ;.) The phone number is +31 627127765.
There is a free WiFi connection in the conference venue at University Hall. For this you should login as ‘UU-visitor’ and accept the terms. After that you will have free WiFi access in the building. Please note that heavy applications (like YouTube films) may compromise the quality of the network.
From now on, registration and abstract submission can be done separately, although both are of course still necessary to be able to visit ISHS2014. To do this, take a close look at the registration and submission part of the web site.
Contrary to American universities, Dutch universities usually have no student campuses. Therefore there will be no central housing facility for the conference. If you book your own accommodation, we will provide you with a list of suggestions in different categories: commercial, affordable or the guest program. The list includes hotels, hostels, airbnb and couch surfing. Also, for those with really limited resources we are currently setting up a guest program. We hope that you will find your way selecting facilities. If you need any assistance, please let us know. Read more on our Accommodation page.
The conference committee is looking for interesting suggestions for arthouse films with humorous content or intent. We are currently investigating the opportunities to show such a fiilm during the ISHS conference. Also, we are looking for people who could contribute to a scientific evaluation and discussion of the film. Any suggestion for a film or an expert? Please send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Since the start of registration we are happy to announce that four students from Sweden, Malaysia, Turkey and the United Kingdom have registered for our ISHS conference. This is very encouraging and we welcome you all to Utrecht in July!
A happy and humorous new year to all of you! I would like to start this ISHS 2014 year with the following quote: “The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present.” The origin of this quote is unknown. It is ascribed to Alice Morse Earle (1851-1912) a writer who was born in Worcester, Massuchusetts, but some sources say the quote is much older.
Registration and submission is possible from January 1st, 2014 and runs until April 1st. The early bird fee is set at 325 euros for members and 400 euros for non-members. This includes registration, abstract submission, all lunches, coffee and tea breaks, the conference dinner and a cultural activity during the conference. Students pay 150 euros for this. To reduce their housing costs, we are currently setting up a guest program for them. Faculty students will host students visiting the conference.
Registration and abstract submission is organized as follows. First, one registers as a regular participant or as a student participant. After your payment has been received, you will be enabled to submit your abstract. You will get a separate e-mail for this.
Around ISHS2014 there are a number of other conferences, too. Three of them are worth mentioning:
1. The conference on Laughter 1500-1800, 26-27 May 2014, Venice, Italy. See http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/emforum/events/laughterconference/
2. The International Toy Research Association world congress, 23-25 July, 2014 in Braga, Portugal, 23-25 July 2014. See http://itratoyresearch.org/2014_Braga.php.
3. The International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature and Media (IGEL), 21-25 July, 2014 in Torino. See http://www.igel2014.unito.it/
Especially conferences 2 and 3 may be combined very well with ISHS2014.
